Investigating identity, dislocation, migration, and urban living, Hema Upadhyay produces intricate, often political installations, sculptures, mixed-media compositions, and photographs. In her words: “I think I see my works as a whole, because one idea leads to another. From the physical aspect to the mental aspect, how the landscape affects you and what it does to the people.” The urban landscape of Mumbai, and its complex brew of populations, feeds into her work, and her psyche. For Upadhyay, art-making is ultimately a personal pursuit. Whether addressing the nuclear tensions between Pakistan and India, the slums that arise in the wake of luxury-building projects, or the unspoken strain lying just beneath the surface of human relationships, she inflects each of her pieces with her own experiences.
